North Port Mayor Chris Hanks, a Republican, filed Tuesday to run for Sarasota County Commission District 3 in 2020, instead of seeking a second term on the North Port City Commission.
Hanks, 46, said that the recent change to single-member voting districts prompted his decision to run for County Commission.
Hanks is the first person to file for any of the three County Commission seats that will be on the November 2020 ballot.
“I think it’s very important for the city of North Port to have representation up in North County,” he said. “I think it’s time for North Port to start getting recognition.”
