The Republican Party of Sarasota (RPOSC) has named U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina) as the recipient of the 2019 Statesman of the Year Award. Sen. Graham will receive the award and be the featured speaker at the RPOSC 2019 Statesman of the Year Dinner on November 15 from 6-8:30 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency Sarasota, 1000 Boulevard of the Arts, Sarasota.
“We are thrilled to have such a national conservative leader as Sen. Lindsey Graham as our 2019 Statesman of the Year,” said Jack Brill, acting Chairman of the RPOSC. “Sen. Graham fits right in the mold with our previous Statesman winners, including President Donald Trump. Twice.”
Previous winners of the Statesman of the Year Award include President Trump, Sen. Rick Scott, Sen. Ted Cruz, Vice President Dick Cheney, U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney (Stateswoman of the Year), Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour and Fox News and nationally syndicated radio host Sean Hannity.
“For a community the size of Sarasota, this list of Statesman Award winners is impressive and shows the importance of the region to Florida and on the national stage,” Brill said. “Sen. Graham continues to demonstrate that.”
Sen. Graham, a South Carolina Republican, has a hard-earned reputation as a conservative problem-solver and one of the strongest proponents of a robust national defense. Graham is also a leader in cutting spending, reforming entitlements, confirming conservative judges, and eliminating burdensome regulations. He made national headlines when he called out Senate Democrats during the confirmation hearings of Justice Brett Kavanaugh. It is this fire and grit that have made Senator Graham a conservative hero.
Graham was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2002 and was re-elected in 2008 and 2014. Graham is Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee and sits on the Foreign Relations Committee, Budget Committee, and Appropriations Committee, where he serves as the Defense Subcommittee Chairman.
Prior to serving in the Senate, Graham was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1994 as the first Republican from the Third Congressional District of South Carolina since 1877.
Senator Graham has also compiled a distinguished record in the U.S. Air Force, logging more than six years of active duty service as an Air Force lawyer. He served in the South Carolina Air National Guard where he served until 1995. During the first Gulf War, Graham was called to active duty state-side to prepare members for deployment. In 1995, Graham joined the U.S. Air Force Reserves. Graham retired from the Air Force Reserves in June 2015 with the rank of Colonel.
A native South Carolinian, Graham grew up in a blue-collar family and was the first member of his family to go to college, earning undergraduate and law degrees from the University of South Carolina. He lives in the town of Seneca and is a member of Corinth Baptist Church.
